Why the change?
The new standard change addresses the hazard of unattended operation of an opener operable with a Smart Phone. The change requires all new installations of smart openers to have a safety beam installed from the 1st December 2020.

What standard does this change refer to?
The change in AS/NZS 60335.2.92:2012 Amendment 2:2018 addresses the hazard of unattended closing of a garage door when using your smartphone away from home. 

Does the change affect smart openers installed before 1st December 2020?
Safety beams are not required for smart openers installed prior to 1st December 2020. However, it is recommended to have a safety beam installed for additional safety.

Do I need to install a safety beam if I am replacing an old opener with a smart opener after 1st December 2020?
Yes.

 

Do I need to install a safety beam if I purchased the opener before 1st December 2020 but installed it afterwards?
Yes. AS/NZS 60335.2.95:2012 Amendment 2:2018 addresses the installation date, not purchasing date.
