Safety requirements

Before you start your roller door installation, check the following:

  • All supporting walls are structurally sound to avoid damage.
  • You have the correct fasteners for your structure.
  • You have adequate space above the doorway to house the rolled-up garage door and fittings.
  • The surface above the doorway is flush and free from any protrusions.
  • You have sufficient room on each side of the doorway for the tracks.
  • Your work area is clear of obstructions.
  • You wear appropriate safety gear—gloves, boots, and safety goggles.

Tools you’ll need

Your checklist for garage door installation should include the following materials:

  • Two-step ladders
  • A laser level
  • A spirit level
  • Screwdrivers and a pipe wrench
  • A power drill and drill bits
  • A softwood chock about 400mm long
  • A socket set
  • A tape measure and a Stanley knife
  • A marker pen or pencil

How to prepare

  • Clear the area: Remove vehicles and stored items.
  • Check power access: Ensure outlet availability for motorised doors.
  • Inspect the opening: Verify measurements and structural integrity.
  • Gather tools: Have everything ready before starting.
  • Review instructions: Read through the entire installation guide first.
  • Arrange help: Have an assistant available for lifting.

Pre-installation tips

How to install a roller door

Step 1: Install the brackets and mount the door

  1. Mark bracket positions: Measure the roller door width and mark it on each wall, adding the extra width required (as noted on your model’s installation instructions).
  2. Check clearances: Ensure there’s enough headroom and side space for installation.
  3. Mount the first bracket: Hold it in place, mark the holes, drill, and bolt securely (weld if attaching to steel framework).
  4. Level and mount the second bracket: Use a laser level to align and install the bracket on the opposite wall.
  5. Lift the rolled-up door: With assistance and safe lifting methods (ropes, etc.), raise the door and rest it on the brackets.
  6. Fit the axle: Slide the axle into the bracket slots with the door facing forward to roll down the front.
  7. Secure loosely: Attach U-bolts and saddles, then centre the door in the opening.
Rotate the curtain: Turn the door so the bottom edge ends up inside the garage.

Step 2: Set spring tension

  • Attach axle: Secure the axle to the brackets using washers and nuts.
  • Apply spring tension: Rotate the door forward as specified in your manual (turn count depends on door size).
  • Cut the strapping: Have your mate cut the straps while you maintain spring tension.
  • Lower curtain and secure: Gently pull the curtain down and place a wooden chock to hold it until the tracks are installed.
  • Test the door: Repeat the process if needed.

Step 3: Install the tracks

  1. Check alignment: Pull the door down, ensuring an even overlap on both sides of the opening.
  2. Fit the first track: Slide the first track onto the curtain edge and loosely fasten it to the wall.
  3. Repeat on the other side: Use a spirit level to ensure both tracks are perfectly vertical.
  4. Test door movement: Slide the door up and down to check tension and track clearance. Adjust if needed.
  5. Secure tracks: Once satisfied, tighten all fasteners.
  6. Attach handle and weight bar: Fit the external handle and, if included, the weight bar to the bottom rail for added stability.

How to install a roller door opener

Installing roller door motors doesn’t involve any electrical wiring (as long as you already have a power outlet near your door), so they’re easy to install yourself.

  1. Check door balance: Ensure your roller door operates smoothly manually first.
  2. Mount the motor: Install above the door centre using the provided brackets.
  3. Attach drive shaft: Connect the drive shaft to the motor and adjust to the correct length.
  4. Install safety sensors: Position safety sensors on both sides of the opening, properly aligned.
  5. Plug in the system: Connect the motor, sensors, and controls per the manufacturer's diagram.
  6. Program settings: Set travel limits, force settings, and remote controls.
  7. Test thoroughly: Run multiple cycles and verify that the safety sensors work.

Always follow your specific door’s installation instructions. We also recommend hiring a professional garage door installer as a safety precaution and for peace of mind.

Post-installation maintenance

Modern garage doors need minimal routine maintenance, but we recommend you follow this six-monthly checklist to keep things running smoothly.

General cleaning and inspection

  • Wipe down the door curtain using a soft cloth or sponge with mild detergent and warm water.
  • Rinse immediately with clean water to avoid residue buildup.
  • Inspect the brackets, springs, tracks, fasteners, cables, and weather seal for signs of wear or damage.

Lubrication tips

  • Apply grease or oil to the springs to keep them operating quietly.
  • Avoid lubricating the locking mechanism, as that may cause it to malfunction.
  • Don’t oil the tracks. Instead, clean them occasionally using a spirit-based cleaner.

Door balance test

Check the spring tension by performing a simple balance test:

  • Close the door.
  • Lift it to waist height.
  • If the door stays in place, the spring tension is correct. If it moves, you may need to rebalance the spring.

Re-tensioning the spring

Spring maintenance can be dangerous. Garage door springs are under high tension and can cause serious injury if mishandled. If you're unsure, we recommend consulting professional services. Only proceed if you are confident in your ability and have assistance.

  1. Tie ropes around each end of the door roll to secure it.
  2. Both you and your assistant should be on ladders at each end of the door.
  3. Grip the axle firmly using a large pipe wrench.
  4. Loosen the U-bolt nuts at both ends while maintaining grip on the wrench.
  5. Rotate the axle clockwise to increase tension and anticlockwise to reduce it.
  6. Re-tighten the U-bolts and carefully release the pipe wrench.

Bunnings Install a Roller Door opener

Regular cleaning, lubrication of moving parts, and inspection of springs and tracks is recommended, but do not Oil or Grease the guides themselves.

Garage Doors typically have a 12 Month warranty, while they are painted with the same Colorbond process, this is less than roof's as they are a moving, flexible curtain and made of softer, lower tensile steel compared to those used for roof and wall cladding materials

Roller Doors are not generally insulated but some customers have had limited success lining the inside of the door with Aircell Aluminium Bubble or similar, althought this can cause rubbing of the paint finish when the door is rolled up.
